It might not have been at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
