A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

One account, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the morning of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
