Dracula Film Analysis – Besson’s Romantic Reinterpretation of the Classic Horror Story is Ridiculous but Entertaining

It’s possible there is no great enthusiasm for an updated adaptation of Dracula from Luc Besson, the celebrated French director for polished extravagance. However, it’s worth noting: his lavishly upholstered love story with vampires boasts bold vision and flair – and amid its theatrical camp, it could be preferable over the recent, stately interpretation by Robert Eggers of Nosferatu. A few strange elements appear, including one shot that appears to show a territorial boundary between France and Romania.

Waltz as a Witty Yet Careworn Clergyman Hunting Vampires

Christoph Waltz embodies a witty yet careworn vampire-hunting priest – it’s surprising he never took on this role before – who arrives in Paris in 1889 for the French Revolution centenary celebrations. Likewise present is the sinister Dracula, brought to life by the expert in grotesque roles Caleb Landry Jones speaking in a twisted regional dialect evoking Carell’s Gru character of the Despicable Me series. This character suits him perfectly.

The Narrative: A Saga of Heartbreak

The plot unfolds as follows: the vampire lord has been restlessly roaming the world in anguish for hundreds of years since he became undead, a penalty for his irreligious grief after the passing of his beloved Elisabeta (a first film part for Zoë Bleu, daughter of Rosanna Arquette). the vampire has been searching, searching, searching for a lady who could be the reincarnation of his deceased partner. As ill fortune would have it, the chosen woman is revealed as Mina (portrayed once more by Bleu), the demure fiancee of the count’s timid estate manager, Jonathan Harker (played by Ewens Abid), who has recently been to the vampire’s estate to negotiate his real estate holdings and the tiny painting of the charming Mina attracted Dracula’s gaze.

The Filmmaker’s Approach and Comic Flair

Besson organizes Dracula’s second-act backstory of international journeys sporting extravagant attire skillfully, and he willingly includes offering some comedy moments with a distinctly Mel Brooks flavour – for example the count’s repeated and futile attempts to kill himself after Elisabeta’s death, in addition to farcical scenes that follow Dracula applies to himself using a particular scent during the 1700s in Florence, which causes him to be compelling to the opposite sex. Outlandish but entertaining.

Dracula is on digital platforms beginning on the first of December and in disc format from December 22nd. It screens in Australian cinemas from 5 February 2026.
