A senior Russian army officer has been killed following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event took place on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Investigators indicated that one possible explanation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Teams have been dispatched to the location, which is reportedly in a southern district of the capital.

Reports indicate the explosion happened in a car park adjacent to a residential building.

History of Targeted Attacks

Since the beginning of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event echoes other serious incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a source from Ukraine previously linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.

The war has witnessed clandestine operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
