The most severe potential impacts of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by scientists, including a blistering 4C increase in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in sea levels. Another scenario envisions a plunge of 6C in temperature following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and power requirements.
These effects, some of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are viewed as improbable but plausible. The researchers said that these models plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK not ready for worst-case results.
"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are plausible," commented Nigel Arnell who directed the analysis. "The nation has been formulating policy in the absence of the frameworks to test against extreme possibilities. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to prepare for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."
Another collection of severe models sets out the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be triple standard measurements.
The probability of the extreme scenarios happening could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what measures will be enacted to tackle climate change and how the planet's climate will react. This analysis was compared to defence planning or scenario planning for financial systems.
The worst-case scenarios could be used to inform the development of long-term infrastructure, including expanded cities, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Awareness of these environmental threats could also accelerate the transition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The analysis developed the extreme models using a mix of past data and records, digital projections and established principles. The possibilities exclude potential global problems such as the agricultural collapse and geopolitical instability.
This work was requested as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Previous assessments have cautioned that insufficient focus was being allocated to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
The government's climate advisors has said that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and assess the dangers for 4C. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "inadequate" by some observers.
