Taliban Employed Left-Behind British Gear to Find Afghans Who Worked With Western Troops, Investigation Hears

A confidential source has told an official investigation that the UK abandoned confidential technology allowing the militant group to identify local individuals that had served with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were instructed to change residences and alter their contact details to avoid detection from militant forces.

MPs are investigating the UK government's management of a catastrophic disclosure of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to relocate to Britain to avoid the Taliban.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

An electronic document including private information, comprising names, addresses and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at special operations center in last year.

The incident was discovered months later, when the names of several individuals who had sought to settle in Britain were posted on Facebook.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's this misconception that Afghan rulers do not have comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have your phone number, they can locate your precise location. That's precisely what specialized teams accomplished.”

During testimony about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, Person A stated: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Preliminary research submitted to the investigation suggested that at least 49 family members and co-workers of people concerned by the incident had been murdered.

A gag order concerning the breach was enacted in last year and blocked any information about it from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she was working with advised Afghan families they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they moved where feasible and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would result in them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower contested that internal investigation performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to conclude that the obtaining of the dataset by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves past work history.”

She detailed disturbing violence experienced by concerned people, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“Instances include young kids who have had their arms broken to pressure households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
