The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup Despite Formal Protests by Egypt and Iran

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup will continue as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations and External Festivities

Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.

Cultural Context of Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values
in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Symbols

The international federation holds full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to showcase Seattle’s proud history of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
  • Planners have pledged to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.

The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” the statement concluded.
