Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup will continue as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced strong concerns about a scheduled âPride Match.â
Local organizers stated clearly they are âproceeding as plannedâ with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the match venue.
âAs the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26âs primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,â said the vice-president of communications.
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be associated with celebrations that âdirectly contradict the social, religious and cultural values ⊠in Arab and Islamic societies.â In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised âits opposition against the issue.â
The international federation holds full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing âsocial and sporting symbols,â a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
