The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to better meet community desires.
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire message from the president's announcement:
Teamâ
I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope youâre as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: âI am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative developers we have had the chance to work with - and weâre eager for that partnership to endure.â
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last fallâs Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct vision.
Itâs been inspiring to see how far youâve advanced. You embraced the input to heart and revamped the title with a refreshed goal - one thatâs ready to deliver on its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development youâve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Director of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
His guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to continue witnessing the progress of the game in the weeks to come.
David
The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect runâor die tryingâin this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description explains. "Face the opponents with unique powers, risks, and tests that shift every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or aim high, put it on the line, and hope your group can secure victory? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect further news as production continues.
