The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
