Liverpool's head coach has stated that the team leadership share his views regarding the team's slump and he has no intention of discarding their forward-thinking philosophy in pursuit of a solution. The manager admitted that six unsuccessful results in seven matches was not good enough ahead of Saturday's match against Aston Villa.
Liverpool's coach recognized the pressure was on before his makeshift team were eliminated from the Carabao Cup against the London club. However, he insisted that this pressure to arrest the slide is not coming from the team's proprietors or football administration following a substantial investment of approximately ÂŁ450 million.
"Our views align," stated Slot, whose team next week face Real Madrid in the European competition and travel to Manchester City in the English top flight.
Liverpool's manager thinks his team "possess an exceptional group if they are all fit and completely set for the programme we are facing". He noted that the recent signings in talents including the German international and the forward, who is expected to be sidelined again against Aston Villa through fitness issues, had left the club "in an excellent position for the short-term future and the long-term future".
When questioned about why his team were taking so long to gel, he replied: "You don't really help me. 'Why, why, why?' I offer insights and people say I'm offering alibis. I can list five or six reasons why we are not winning as much or experiencing losses as we do but, as I consistently state, there are insufficient justifications to have a performance streak as we had now."
Only Burnley (twenty-one) have conceded more clear opportunities from open play this season than Slot's team (nineteen). The table-toppers, the North London club, have conceded only two. Yet Slot denies the defense has been too vulnerable and claims there is no reason to sacrifice his attacking principles for a defensive approach after 10 games without a goalless performance.
"In my view we're not conceding a lot of chances so I find no basis to change our playing style completely but we need to do better in keeping clean sheets," he said.
"When facing United, how many opportunities did we allow? When playing Frankfurt when we were 3-1 up, we barely allowed a attempt on goal. In every match we have played so far we haven't conceded a numerous openings. Absolutely not. We do concede a slightly more than the previous campaign but that is related to us being behind early so you take a bit more risk. But typically I don't think that our problem is that we give up too many openings. Our challenge is we are unable to finish the opportunities we generate."
