The Mystery Within that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress constructed from the memories of Vecna. The search for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a moment that may just hold the means to overcome him for good.

Heads Up: The following details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.

Like many elements this season, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a vessel into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the control of a malevolent force, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
