The club's supporters labeled the day as “a deeply emotional moment for the club” after the team was placed into administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.
Sheffield Wednesday now face almost certain relegation after the EFL’s penalty placed them at minus six points, 15 points from safety. Players and staff experienced delayed wages over recent months, compounding the period of turbulence.
Administrator Begbies Traynor are now in charge of the process aiming to sell club assets, including Hillsborough stadium, to recoup debts including tax liabilities. Shortly after the club entered administration, stadium seating with the owner's name were removed from the North Stand.
“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, poor oversight, and repeated failures to engage credible buyers stated the supporters' trust. “Administration is not something to be celebrated. It needn’t have ended this way. But we are overjoyed to have Dejphon Chansiri out of our club for good
Sheffield Wednesday's coach, Henrik Pedersen held talks with administrators along with his coaching team, players, and staff on Friday morning. The Dane said entering administration was necessary to embark on a new era.
Pedersen stressed “while difficult, this marks a positive turning point”, noting: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. A reboot is needed to unlock the club's potential. Now there is a belief, a hope, there is a feeling of looking towards better days. I envision a promising future for the club.”
Employees expressed emotion upon hearing the update, with Pedersen saying: “Uncertainty exists. Do we get our salary now? What happens now? Will it be better? Will it not be better? The general feeling was that they are all looking forward to the future together with Sheffield Wednesday
The club's condition has been deteriorating sharply since the summer after the former manager and players left due to salary delays. The league voiced worries regarding financial health earlier this season.
From that point, the club have been living hand-to-mouth, applying all revenue including league payments to deal with debts. Facing potential closure orders by tax authorities, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.
A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield from the insolvency firm stated: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses over multiple seasons, with those losses historically funded by the former owner Mr Chansiri. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium together, which is great news for supporters.”
The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight served as another reminder of the need for the independent football regulator, which was signed into law this year. It should be active by the 2027-28 campaign.
“My club Wigan faced similar issues, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” she added.
Supporters have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise this season with many absent during the Middlesbrough match in the latest boycott. Ahead of the Oxford game, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.
“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Every ticket bought, every shirt worn, every pie and pint enjoyed in Hillsborough helps the club rebuild. Meaningful change is possible if we act. Now is the time to be Wednesday
The trust anticipates buyer interest while developing a supporter-backed purchase plan to ensure that “liquidation remains off the table”.
The manager, once an assistant, hasn't accepted demotion despite the severity of the challenge. “We have to be a new Sheffield Wednesday with an old heart, he stated. The club has great potential. I have a big belief we can survive in the Championship with this group of players. The fight continues.”
