The White Sox Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The contract includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for earning the MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
  • $250,000 for winning the ROY honor.

The contract includes that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a additional payment of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese to represent the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, bolsters a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the AL Central but representing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.

Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite recording 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

International Pedigree

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he blasted a tying home run in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual championship win.

The lefty slugger is slated to be officially presented at a press conference on Monday.
