England have chosen a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted five past matches.
During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australiaâs Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are âpermanent and not going to change,â a side relying on seamers remains the probable decision.
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some spin while also bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as âOK,â adding that âfrom my perspective, the experienced spinner is still Englandâs top slow bowler.â
âIt is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who havenât done it in the previous in these conditions,â Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
âIâm not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.â
