Three Lions Coach Shares His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Today, he is focused to assist Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. His journey from athlete to trainer started through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11
poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his destiny.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he built a reputation with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs led him to elite sides, and he held roles with national teams across multiple countries. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream
However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a structured plan enabling us to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies involve mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses “Team England” and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“It's not time off or a pause,” he explains. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility to not only anticipate with developments but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play ought to embody everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to operate similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for development knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries including former players. For self-improvement, he sought out tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He completed the course with top honors, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those convinced and he recruited the coach on to his staff with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants except Barry.

The next manager at Chelsea took over, within months, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
