UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
